Service Learning at the University of Duisburg-Essen

Service Learning seminars have successfully been accomplished at the University of Duisburg-Essen since winter semester 2006/07. Meanwhile, within the faculties of the educational, social and economic sciences, courses with project-orientation and focus on problem-solution are put into a charitable context. A broadening of the range of propositions for faculties is being scheduled at the moment.

Service Learning is more than conventional project work. With the usage of this method of teaching and learning students step out of university and apply their expertise practically. This way, students can acquire valuable key competencies, which are required on the job market, as well as broaden and reinforce their knowledge. Job qualifying preparations and the training of competencies are of high significance, particularly in the new Bachelor and Master Courses. Generally, conventional seminars may be adjusted to the concept of Service Learning without difficulties and new ideas for seminars can be displayed.
